The term posture is used to describe how your body is positioned when you’re sitting, standing and lying down.
The Importance of Posture
Good posture positions you where stress is properly distributed to the intended muscles and ligaments. As a result, the muscles can work efficiently and as intended, which in turn decreases wear and tear on your joints, and decreases your risk of joint discomfort and degenerative arthritis; the stress placed on the ligaments holding the joints in your spine together is also decreased. When your muscles, joints and ligaments are working efficiently, your vital organs can remain in proper position and the nervous system is able to function normally.
Poor Posture can lead to all sorts of problems:
- Chronic back, neck, and shoulder pain and stiffness
- Foot, knee, hip, and back injuries from falls
- Headaches and Fatigue
- Muscle Weakness
- Difficulty Breathing
- Problems with Digestion
- Nerve compression, Sciatic Pain, and Carpal Tunnel
